February 5th, 2008

“The history of the world is but the biography of great men.” Local journalist Salim Muwakkil takes this quote from Thomas Carlyle to set the tone of his latest book, “Harold! Photographs from the Harold Washington Years.”“Harold” is a collection of iconic photographs chronicling the mayor’s years and the rise of black Chicago. Along with Salim, Harold photographers Marc PoKempner and Antonio Dickey pay tribute to the city’s first black mayor. In this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll talk with Salim about his latest book and what legacy mayor Harold left Chicago.Salim is senior editor of In These Times and has become one of the most insightful writers on African-American culture and politics. He was also my first guest on Community, Media and You six years ago and a winner of our Studs Terkel community journalism award. Salim, welcome back.

Hosted by Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop @ Columbia College and joining him on the show is author of the book “Harold!” Salim Muwakkil
