Greek Town, China Town, Pilsen, Ukrainian Village, Humbolt Park – Chicago is a melting pot of world cultures and traditions. Our city is stronger and livelier because of our immigrant communities and the new traditions they bring.Apart from hosting ethnic restaurants and dozens of parades, Chicago is catching on to the growing popularity of world music. This summer, a number of festivals will celebrate Chicago’s diverse world music scene and the immigrant communities that live here.

One gathering in particular is the Nuestra Musica Festival. Hosted by the Old Town School of Music, Nuestra Musica will show-off the folk traditions of Latin America. Musicians, dancers, poets, and cooks will gather this month to commemorate one of Chicago’s largest ethnic communities.

In this episode of City Voices, we’ll be hearing from one of Nuestra Musica’s organizers, Nashima Carrera and we’ll also hear traditional Venezuelan music from David Blasini.
