Congratulations Terkel Scholarship Winner, Katie Kather

The Workshop is proud to announce Katie Kather, recent graduate of the Masters of Journalism program at Columbia College, Chicago, as the winner of the 2014 Studs Terkel Scholarship.

“I decided to go into journalism because I really wanted to tell people’s stories,” she told the Workshop. Her winning project, an audio documentary and photo slideshow, told the story of Austin neighborhood residents in their own words.

Kather regrets she did not know Studs before his passing in 2008, but recognizes his impact on community journalism. “A lot of my influence came from other journalists with “Terkelian” ideals, like [2014 Community Media Award Winner] Steve Bogira.”

Congratulations, Katie. We’re looking forward to shaking your hand this Thursday at the Studs Terkel Community Media Awards Benefit.
