The Face of Homelessness
September 26th, 2007As recent headlines tell us, the definition of homelessness has been misinterpreted. The City’s recent study that there are only 24 homeless in Chicago was met with backlash and claims that the number is far higher – closer to 1,000. It is clear that the definition of what it means to be homeless and what leads to homelessness varies from person to person. To help communities learn the perspectives of this largely misunderstood population, The Chicago Coalition for the Homeless has put together a Speakers Bureau of formerly homeless individuals to talk about their experiences. Their stories give a face to homelessness and show the community what can happen when you give someone a second chance. Their stories also tell us of the “invisible homeless”, those that sleep at the homes of their friends or families and are often left out of the discussion on homelessness. On this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll have a conversation with members of the Speakers Bureau and learn about their experiences as homeless individuals and what challenges they face as they re-enter society.Hosted by Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop @ Columbia College with guests Re-entry Organizer of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Andrea Hall and two members of the Speakers Bureau, Johnnie Lee Savory and Gloria Evans. You are watching “Community, Media, and You” on CANTV, Channel 21 in Chicago. Our producer for this show was Jessica Rosenberg.
