Organizing in the Black Community
February 2nd, 2009
Community organizing is a Chicago tradition. And that tradition made headlines during the historical presidential campaign of our very own Barack Obama. But many African American communities in Chicago have traditionally been under-organized. Is this changing today. With new political leadership, will dynamics shift? Will the traditional role of the black church or civic organizations change? This year, as we celebrate black history month, what can we learn from Chicago Freedom Movement of the 60s, or Harold Washington’s election in the 80s?And in that spirit, on this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll talk about the legacy and accomplishments of black organizers. Here with me is veteran civil rights activist Timuel Black Jr. - who marched with Martain Luther King. We’ll also talk about the new generation of black organizers with Jamiko Rose, from the Organization of the North East.
