2009 Studs Terkel Award Winners with Alden Loury
January 29th, 2009
Today’s media landscape is changing. Whether we read our news in the paper or go online, the way we get our information changes almost daily. But as big media companies continue to cut pages, who will be our eyes and ears of Chicago? Who will deliver the information we need to know to make good decisions as citizens? Will we have to rely on the ladies of The View or bloggers to get our news? For nearly twenty years, Alden Loury has been a journalist. As editor and publisher of the Chicago Reporter, he has been writing investigative stories on racial inequality and injustice in our city. The monthly newsmagazine is the city’s government watchdog, and continues to give a voice to disenfranchised communities.Recognizing Alden’s commitment to investigative, public-affairs reporting, The Community Media Workshop awarded him with this year’s Studs Terkel Community Media Award.
The Award honors outstanding journalists who tell the stories of Chicago’s voiceless. In an age when investigative, public affairs coverage is diminishing, this award is more timely than ever.
This year’s winners include the Tribune’s David Jackson, National Public Radio’s Scot Simon and our board members also nominated yours truly.
On this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll talk with Alden about his journalism career and how the Chicago Reporter is keeping up with the times.
