How I Spent My Summer Vacation
September 26th, 2007Summer vacation is the time of year most high school students kick back and take a break from their more serious endeavors. The majority of students pass the time hanging out with friends or working seasonal jobs.Mikva Challenge’s Summer Government and Leadership Institute provides an alternative for the high schooler interested in getting involved with their government. The program is a six-week paid internship that places students in the local office of an elected official. The students also participate in a weekly leadership workshop where they learn about community organizing, create public policy recommendations and develop public speaking skills. This summer’s Mikva Challenge interns did not have a typical summer. They addressed and acted on an issue facing youth across America – voter registration and education. The interns created a list of recommendations and presented it to the Board of Elections and Chicago Public Schools. In this episode of Community, Media & You, we’ll have a conversation about Mikva Challenge’s Summer Government and Leadership Institute and what these students accomplished during their summer vacation.Host Thom Clark of the Community Media Workshop @ Columbia College is joined by Mikva Challenge’s summer government and leadership coordinator, Cristina Perez and two participants of the summer government and leadership program, Kola Walker and Joshua Taylor.
