The ADA at 25: What’s the news?

On June 16, 2015, Community Media Workshop held a briefing on the significance of the Americans with Disabilities Act as we celebrate its 25th year in effect. Budget Cuts May Devastate Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget cuts “would absolutely devastate the mental health safety net,” said Heather O’Donnell, a top official with Thresholds, a leading Chicago area mental health agency.

“We would never ever accept the way we treat people with mental illness for the way we treat people who have cancer or Alzheimer’s,” added O’Donnell, who leads her agency’s public advocacy efforts.

Her warning about the cuts came at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act that was hosted by Community Media Workshop, a non-profit group that helps links the news media to community issues.
