Chicago and beyond
The Working In These Times blog posts coverage of yesterday’s action at Wells Fargo and reports by David Moberg on Sunday’s activities – he says what’s being launched is a “much-needed campaign for a new banking system and a new economy—and today’s massive march on the American Bankers Association convention.
Another Working post looks at prospects for action on the foreclosure crisis. Art Levine reviews the failure of the Obama administration’s efforts, just in terms of the small numbers of homeowners helped (Elizabeth Warren’s Congressional Oversight Panel says the administration failed to shape a program that addresses the most significant engines of the foreclosure crisis, unemployment and exotic mortgage products).
He discusses a new bill introduced by Senator Jack Reed (cosponsored by Dick Durbin) that would require that homeowners be evaluated for loan modifications and encourage localities to establish the kind of mediation programs being pushed in Cook County by Action Now.
He checks in with National People’s Action, which issued a call for today’s action months ago, highlighting the proposals in the group’s Save the American Dream campaign, including disclosure of ownership of loans; loan modifications that are permanently affordable; and reviewing mortgages for evidence of fraud before foreclosure can proceed.
Levine notes “few of [these proposals] seem to be on their way to being implemented” – then he appends NPA’s ideas for things the Obama administration could do, without congressional approval, to make its Home Affordable Mortgage program work for more families.
