In These Times reports on protests against KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell in Chicago and Madison for firing employees based on no-match letters from the Social Security Administration. 

The firings have affected more than 200 employees of Yum Brands, the largest fast-food chain in the world. But apparently they’ve been limited to Illinois and Wisconsin. 

They firings came this winter and spring, following a judicial ruling blocking the Bush administration’s attempt to use Social Security no-match letters to enforce immigration law (see this 2007 Newstip), and prior to the Obama administration dropping the program.

“We believe it’s completely illegal and completely immoral,” says Leone Jose Biccheiri of the Chicago Workers Collaborative, which is working with a workers center in Madison on the issue.  ( More background:  a 2006 Newstip, and blog posts from 2008 and 2009.)
