Local lights at Green Fest
Lots of local organizations and leaders featured in this weekend’s Green Festival at Navy Pier, sponsored by Green America (formerly Co-op America) and Global Exchange. Here are a few highlights:
SATURDAY
Noon – Chicago Housing Cooperatives with Corren Evans of Lakeview East Cooperative (and South Shore Chamber of Commerce), Mark Fick of Stone Soup Cooperative (and Chicago Community Loan Fund), and Joyce Fitzgerald of Logan Square Housing Cooperative
2 p.m. Naomi Davis of Blacks in Green on Green Village Building
2 p.m. Marison Becerra, youth organizer for Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (she’s helped develop interactive online maps and videos to involve the community in a campaign to shut down polluting coal plants on the Southwest Side) on the Environmental Justice Movement
2 p.m. Local Living Communities (on building sustainable economies) features Suzanne Keers of Local First Chicago, Jeff McCourt of Good Jobs First-Illinois, and Ellen Shepard of the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce
5 p.m. Ayo Maat of Independent Movement of Paratransit Riders on Greening the Disability Movement
SUNDAY
1 p.m. African Americans in the Green Movement, with Naomi Davis, Austin urban farming activist LaDonna Redmond (Institute for Community Resource Development), and Orin Williams of Growing Home and the Center for Urban Transformation
2 p.m. Nancy Jones of Chicago Fair Trade on Fair Trade in the Workplace
3 p.m. Calvin Holmes of the Chicago Community Loan Fund joins a panel on Socially Responsible Investing
4 p.m. Ed Jacobs of North Side Credit Union speaks on the topic: Break Up With Your Bank
4 p.m. Greening Local Restaurants with Jonathan Alper of the Balanced Kitchen, Helen Cameron of Uncommon Ground in Wrigleyville (with a new location on Devon Ave. featuring Chicago’s first certified organic rooftop farm), and Daniel Rosenthal, developer of the Soprafinna market/cafes and cofounder of Chicago Restaurant Green Co-op
