Toure Muhammad
Back in 2001, after spending time writing for The Final Call newspaper and seeing how much mainstream media got the story wrong, Toure Muhammad wanted to create a publication that provided an additional outlet for the community, helped promote local businesses, and parodied mainstream media. After surveying a few people, he knew he was not alone and thus, Bean Soup Times was born. Bean Soup Times has survived by being versatile. Started off with an email, then website, print publication and now, is back to the internet only. Toure Muhammad has written front page cover stories for The Final Call and N’digo. He is the chief creative strategist for Bean Soup Times, a multimedia outlet where humor, politics and culture meet. He reaches more than 30,000 people through his online network, which includes his blog, email subscribers and social media profiles. He has been featured in the Chicago Reader, Upscale magazine, rolling out newspaper, and N’Digo magapaper. He’s been featured on Tavis Smiley’s radio show on NPR, on Chicago’s WBEZ (Chicago public radio), and many other radio shows. For two years he appeared weekly on Black Chicago’s historic WVON radio station and he’s a former board member for the Community Media Workshop. The Morehouse College graduate has served as a communications director for SEIU, the National Interfaith Committee, and the Nation of Islam’s Saviours’ Day Convention. Most recently, he served as the Communications Director and Press Secretary for Congressman Bobby L. Rush. He has landed articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the International Herald-Tribune, Dateline, Nightline, CNN, and many TV, radio and print media outlets.
