Lorraine Swanson
Lorraine Swanson is the editor and founder of Lake Effect News (www.lakeeffectnews.com), a community news site covering Rogers Park, West Ridge, Edgewater and Uptown.
Her career in journalism had its roots during her childhood, where she was known to visit with the tramps down at the railroad yard, or walk into burning buildings to chat with firefighters. When she was nine, she found a bank bag full of money beneath a bush at Horner Park in Albany Park, while on a walk with her grandfather. The money was promptly turned into the police, and she never did hear from the bank.
A community journalist for 16 years, Swanson has worked for Lerner Newspapers, the Daily Herald, Pioneer Press and Chicago Journal, primarily reporting on Chicago’s Far North lakefront neighborhoods. She is the recipient of an Illinois Press Association award for her reporting on the 1994 Major League Baseball strike’s impact on local businesses. She is also a recent Lisagor Award finalist. Swanson lives and works in Uptown. She loves community journalism because that’s where all the action is.
