Barbara K. Iverson
Barbara K. Iverson teaches Online Journalism at Columbia College Chicago. She is co-publisher of Chicagotalks.org, a hyperlocal news site that covers Chicago’s myriad of neighborhoods. Iverson is often asked to speak about social networking, citizen journalism, and blogging by various groups, locally and nationally.
“DrBarb” started blogging in 1999, and writes about citizen journalism, digital technology, and online media in Chicago, and around the world. A “midlife” journalist, Barbara Iverson has been an elementary school teacher, an educational researcher, and a producer of interactive multimedia, before moving to journalism in 1999. This spring, Iverson and Suzanne McBride will roll out AusinTalks.org (for Chicago’s Westside community) based on their ChicagoTalks model of community and citizen news.
Iverson is the organizer of Chicago Blogger Meetups, a technology consultant, a contributor to Poynter’s E-Media Tidbits, former VP for Technology for Association of Women Journalists(AWJ), a mmeber of Media Bloggers Association (MBA,) the Online News Association (ONA,) and on the Board of Chicago Instructional Technology Foundation (CITF.)
Currently, Barbara is working on a website and print project about business models for online news sites, and doing research on copyright, intellectual property and Fair Use especially in regards to digital media and the internet.
