Born and raised in Kalamazoo, MI, Susan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in literature and earned her master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
Early reporting assignments included covering Chicago’s Southside in 1995 for The Daily Southtown, now known as The Southtown Star, and reporting on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the Huntsville News as part of Medill’s graduate program.
From 1996 to 2006, she worked as a Chicago-based reporter covering commodity and financial markets for international newswires, including Knight Ridder, Reuters and Dow Jones Newswires.
Susan is a member of the Society for Professional Journalists and the American Marketing Association. When she isn’t writing or reading, Susan and her husband, Steve Mannina, enjoy biking along Chicago’s beautiful lakefront.
